Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has officially confirmed that global digital payment giant PayPal is finally preparing to launch its services in Bangladesh. He shared the news on Tuesday (2 December) at the Agro Award 2025 event hosted by Standard Chartered Bank and Channel i in Dhaka. The update comes nearly 10 years after the first promise of PayPal’s entry in 2015, followed by several announcements and delays.
During the programme, the governor also spoke about key financial challenges, including issues in payment systems, agricultural loan distribution, SME financing, and the country’s heavy reliance on cash. He noted that agricultural loans account for just 2% of total lending and emphasised the need to increase this share. He also highlighted the sharp growth in national food grain production since independence, calling it a major achievement.
