In the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Jamaat-led alliance, which won the second-highest number of seats, has finalized its parliamentary leadership.
On Tuesday (February 17) afternoon, the media was informed that Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, will serve as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Naib-e-Amir of the party, has been appointed Deputy Leader of the Opposition. Additionally, Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and newly elected MP, has been named Opposition Whip.
Earlier, after 12:00 PM, the newly elected members of Jamaat and its allied parties took their oaths at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, administered by Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin. Following the oath, the letter nominating the Leader of the Opposition was submitted to the Speaker’s office.
Alliance leaders have pledged to actively perform their role as an effective opposition, both in Parliament and on the streets, to represent public demands.
The oath-taking had been surrounded by political uncertainty in recent days. Previously, Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher had stated that Jamaat members would not take their oaths until BNP-allied MPs did so. However, after an urgent meeting of the newly elected members on Tuesday morning, the alliance decided to join Parliament, citing the importance of maintaining parliamentary democracy and responding to the country’s current situation.
