The government plans to amend the Transfer of Property Act to ensure that parents retain lifelong rights over property gifted to their children, Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman has said.
Under the proposed amendment, parents will be allowed to use and live on the property for the rest of their lives even after transferring ownership. In addition, the property cannot be sold without the consent of both the parents and the child.
The Law Minister said the reform is expected to reduce property-related civil disputes and protect parents from financial insecurity after gifting their property. However, in exceptional cases—such as selling the property to cover medical expenses—a district judge will have the authority to approve the sale even without mutual consent.
