Indian University to Fine Students ₹500 for Skipping Modi’s Birthday Event

The Indian Institute of Management Jammu has faced controversy after its Student Council reportedly issued a notice threatening students with a ₹500 fine for missing a lamp-lighting ceremony held to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. The September 17 event was declared mandatory, with absent students required to provide written explanations. Exemptions were reportedly allowed only for verified medical reasons. The decision drew criticism from Congress leader Syed Nasir Hussain and Bihar MP Sudhakar Singh, who alleged that educational institutions were being used for political publicity.
